Self By Self Woodcut - Martha Jeffrey Galuszka

Printmaking    I utilize many different image-making techniques from traditional etching and ancient woodcut to modern adaptations with new technologies and materials, using whichever method will express the image I am trying to capture on paper.

My images are primarily based on rock and stone formations, exploring how and where they appear in the natural and man-made landscape, including the history of building walls to decorate, confine and mark the boundaries of personal property. Exploring colors, combining layers and inventing surface textures is part of my process where I can imagine I am piling on or peeling away the strata of the earth, discovering deposits and veins in their original state.

Painting    I also use watercolor, acrylic and encaustic wax paints to resolve visual objectives. Landscapes echo my interest in all kinds of rock as present in the places depicted, real or imagined. Within the abstractions I refer to real objects and locations as I continually seek the “aesthetic moment” — that instant that renders a mood or a feeling, or a connection to an actual place that may prompt a relationship with the viewer.

Other Media    I enjoy making books by hand, especially constructions that push the definition, including 3-dimensional shapes and uncommon materials. Narrative is created visually instead of relying on text or story. I can use my prints or paintings and many other processes to accomplish essential goals.

Bio

I have a BS in Art Education from Oklahoma State University, a BFA in Printmaking from Hartford Art School (Hartford, CT), and an MFA in Visual Arts/Printmaking from the Art Institute of Boston/Lesley University. The Oklahoma landscape and the prevalence of stone walls in New England are both significant catalysts and inspiration for my artwork.

I own a printmaking studio in Hartford, CT, called Watermark Press, where I teach artists of all ages and experience how to make unique and wonderful prints. It is the only solvent-free fine art print shop in Connecticut, specializing in contemporary printmaking methods and featuring water based inks and non-toxic techniques for personal and environmental health and safety. Prints are individually pulled by hand with an etching press or on a Vandercook flatbed letterpress. Please visit Watermark Press for more information.
